Foundations in Entreprenurship

Class overview - Syllabus

Money and the pursuit of success is a common goal. In business class this semester, students are pursuing their passion and creating goals leading to owning their own business. They will develop a basic business plan to solve a problem and serve others as they come to understand what it means to add value using the gifts given to them by becoming an entrepreneur. Their journey will include studying lots of examples of adult and teen entrepreneurs from around the country while carefully looking at the characteristics and traits of highly successful entrepreneurs. Students will also have an opportunity to work one-on-one with a successful business professional to help guide their work as young budding entrepreneurs. Studying business must include a deep dive into personal financial truths that relate directly to business. Students will cover lessons on saving, budgeting, and investing. They will also look at cost of goods sold (COGS) and what a profit and loss statement shows. Finally, the student's journey ends with a pitch of their business to “Shark Tank” investors looking to give advice to the students.

Lesson Plan Outline

Hi Parents,

Pablo Picasso is quoted as saying: "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." This has been my life mission for the past 31 years as a school teacher and I would love your help in achieving it this semester with your own child. Could you please take a moment and fill out the following survey about your child:

You may even share it with grandparents, uncles, aunts, and others who know your child well. The point is to speak life and truth into them that will give them insight into their gifts. I am asking them to do the same next week. I find it very impactful when they read what you write in class so I will be printing your response and giving it to them.

On Friday, October 15 they will be meeting with a professional career coach who will consult with them about staring their own business in my class. I hope it will be a very meaningful time for them and the consultant. Of course you are their primary consultant and will have the largest role to play in their life and what business they are to pursue as a 13 year old student.

Again, thank you for taking the time to participate in this assignment and I am looking forward to giving you more updates as the class continues.
